the california heat wave broke local records. according reports hotter longer ever before, , weather patterns caused scorching temperatures positively freakish. fresno, in central california valley, had 6 consecutive days of 110 degree-plus fahrenheit temperatures.


beginning july 31 , august, midwest, ontario, , atlantic states began experiencing heat. temperatures approached 100 mark in rochester, new york on august 1 , coupled highest dew points area has experienced in on 51 years. heat index reached 110 °f day. la guardia airport in new york city recorded 3 consecutive days above 100 °f. temperature peaked @ 102 °f on august 2. colonial downs, horse track in new kent county, virginia, canceled horse racing because of 100 °f heat. saratoga race course, north of albany, canceled racing @ horse track first time in history on august 2. august 8, heat wave had passed areas, persisted in south , southeast, continued reports of mortality in oklahoma.

from july 15 july 22 high temperatures spread across of united states , canada. on monday, july 17, every state except alaska, minnesota, , north dakota recorded temperatures of 90 °f (32 °c) or greater. north dakota had recorded temperature of 104 °f (40 °c) previous day.
from july 23 july 29 abnormal heat concentrated in west coast , south west deserts. 164 fatalities reported in california during period.
from july 29 august 4 heat wave moved eastward, causing further fatalities progressed.
from august 4 august 27, high temperatures persisted in south , southeast united states. heat wave ended progression of cold front through southern plains.
