the schematic designs new kimbell building made public in november 2008, , plans released in may 2010. 85,000 square foot (7,900 m²) structure complement original building not mimic it. unlike original, lines rectilinear, not curvilinear. original, however, have 3 bays middle bay stepped other two. new building expansion, named renzo piano pavilion, officially inaugurated public on november 27, 2013.


the new building should resolve parking issue @ museum. kahn troubled negative impact of automobile on city life; once spoke of destruction of city motor car. fundamentally opposed idea of orienting buildings automobile, kahn placed main parking lot in of building, intending visitors walk around building , enter through planned landscaping. visitors, however, entered through door on ground floor, missing entry experience kahn had designed. new building solve problem underground parking garage. after visitors ascend gallery level of new building, can exit , walk across lawn , courtyard enter original building kahn had intended.
