everest

on third attempt @ summiting tallest mountain in world in 1993, groom completed everest without use of supplemental oxygen. attempted twice in 1991, second time ending in 900-metre (3,000 ft) fall down lhotse face in avalanche; received broken nose , few cracked ribs , lucky have survived ordeal.


k2

in 1994, groom unknowingly turned around 40 metres (130 ft) shy of summit of k2 after taking more difficult , technically demanding sse spur route. returned weeks later , summited mountain via easier abruzzi ridge veikka gustafsson.


kangchenjunga

in 1987 groom summited kanchenjunga (the world s third-highest mountain @ 8598m) on descending developed frostbite in toes of both feet, later resulting in partial amputation of both feet.


makalu

in 1999 climbed makalu (8,463 metres (27,766 ft)), world s fifth-highest mountain.
