shada six-part serial written douglas adams have concluded series 17 in 1980. production halted during filming due strike , never resumed, although reconstruction of serial using narration , existing footage later released on vhs in 1992. story later adapted big finish in 2003 webcast production featuring paul mcgann s eighth doctor (and later released audio story same year), while adams himself reused elements serial first dirk gently novel dirk gently s holistic detective agency. story novelized gareth roberts in 2012.

written alistair beaton & sarah dunant, four-part story commissioned on 12 december 1978. scripts delivered on 5 january 1979 , rejected 4 days later unacceptable.

the doomsday contract

for season 17, john lloyd, frequent collaborator script editor douglas adams, adapted material unpublished science fiction story gigax , in october 1978 submitted shylock, four-part serial written in adams light-hearted style. after providing second draft of storyline modify parts of script avoid issues such rules involving child actors, lloyd forced focus on commitments producer of not 9 o clock news. williams still interested enough in storyline made plans involved writer allan prior work on scripts. storyline commissioned on 7 february 1979 , script list dated 29 june 1979 links lloyd , prior project. lloyd officially agreed writer taking on story on 25 august 1979. in story, doctor subpoenaed appear in court when corporation tries buy earth in order obtain matter-transmutation device.

written pennant roberts, four-part story commissioned on 10 january 1979 dragons of fear. adventure involve planet erinella , 2 men fighting on princess. doctor become involved in own timeline arriving @ wrong time , becoming accused of being poisoner. roberts resubmitted story in mid-1980s script editor eric saward, nothing came of submission.

written andrew smith, story rejected read in august 1978.

the tearing of veil

written alan drury, scripts commissioned on 2 april 1979 four-part story. story set in victorian era , entire action take place in , around vicarage. vicar has died , fake spiritualists exploiting widow. first episode open seance during tardis arrive. on 19 september 1979, story accepted subject alterations.

valley of lost

written philip hinchcliffe, story involved doctor , romana encountering alien luron called godrin crash landed in south american jungle in 1870. adams wrote hinchcliffe on 3 january 1979, explaining proposed script costly produce. later adapted valley of death jonathan morris big finish s lost stories series in january 2012.

untitled storyline (adams)

written douglas adams, story involve doctor going retirement being called upon solve various problems. considered final story of series 17 till williams dismissed idea. replaced shada.

written pat mills & john wagner, story submitted around start of 1979. story involve parallel universe in roman empire never fell. mills & wagner subsequently adapted become comic story iron legion doctor weekly in late 1979.
