an engine shed opened @ exeter bristol , exeter railway when opened line here in 1844. second facility added few years later south devon railway , 2 combined under great western railway (gwr) in 1876. bristol , exeter had been worked gwr until 1849 purchased own locomotives. temporary workshops these built @ exeter permanent facility @ bristol opened in 1851.


when british railways introduced new shed codes in 1950, exeter-based locomotives carried oval cast plate code 83c . last locomotives based here sent elsewhere 14 october 1963, shed area kept fueling , stabling point locomotives , diesel multiple units (dmus) working in area.


from 29 december 1976 recognised depot again, though no locomotives allocated there @ time, , given new code ex . shed used many years without roof, in 1980 new covered maintenance area built. new facilities provided @ depot in 2011, including new fueling point, , jacks dmus not have sent empty bristol when require lifting.
