in 1962, richards went on worldwide tour frank sinatra raise money poor children. tour increased richards s fascination ethnic percussion instruments. during career has collected on 350 instruments, many of them more common in east west. richards wanted instruments continue heard in recordings , other performances , remain as possible. emil richards collection includes common percussion, such xylophone , marimba , exotic, such angklung, bulbul tarang, chimta, flapamba, jal tarang, janggu, lujon, mbira, , pakhavaj.


in 1992, gave sixty-five instruments percussive arts society museum in lawton, oklahoma. member of society s hall of fame. part of collection sold los angeles percussion rentals. many instruments restored , used in recordings , other performances in los angeles. lapr works odd art fabrications custom design , fabricate instruments , hardware such chromatically tuned wood blocks , chromatically tuned bell plate.
