at suggestion of rko studio chief charles koerner, frank capra read greatest gift , saw potential. rko, anxious unload project, in 1945 sold rights capra s production company, liberty films, had nine-film distribution agreement rko, $10,000, , threw in 3 scripts free. capra, along writers frances goodrich , albert hackett, jo swerling, michael wilson, , dorothy parker brought in polish script, turned story , worth using 3 scripts screenplay capra rename s wonderful life. script underwent many revisions throughout pre-production , during filming. final screenplay credit went goodrich, hackett , capra, additional scenes jo swerling.


seneca falls, new york claims when frank capra visited town in 1945, inspired model bedford falls after it. town has annual s wonderful life festival in december. in mid-2009, hotel clarence opened in seneca falls, named george bailey s guardian angel. on december 10, 2010, s wonderful life museum opened in seneca falls, karolyn grimes, played zuzu in movie, cutting ribbon.


both james stewart (from indiana, pennsylvania) , donna reed (from denison, iowa) came small towns. stewart s father ran small hardware store james worked years. reed demonstrated rural roots winning impromptu bet lionel barrymore when challenged milk cow on set.
