the super cup started unofficially in 1978–79 local derby between boavista (taça de portugal holders) , porto (league champions) ended 2–1 victory boavista. following season, derby occurred between benfica , sporting, constituted second unofficial super cup , first played on 2 legs (home , away). success of both unofficial super cup editions, portuguese football federation (fpf) decided uphold competition on yearly basis in two-legged format. first official edition took place in 1981–82 season, under current name.
the rules stated 2 matches played , aggregate result determine winner. if draw occurred, replay of match should played in neutral ground. occurred 6 times — 1984, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995 , 2000 — replay of 1984 edition being contested again in 2 legs.
because interest in super cup waning , in order reduce crowded football calendar, in 2000–01 season, fpf decided abolish two-legged format , replay match , use single match played in neutral ground determine winner.
