nikolay karazin, russian troops taking samarkand in 1868
after retirement military service, karazin wrote many adventure , ethnographic stories , novels:

the popular children s book, cranes flying south, telling story of crane migrating ostashkov swamps upper nile. book combined interesting story, geographic descriptions of places crane flew , illustrations author.
later karazin became known painter , illustrator. painted many large canvases devoted battles , military actions in turkestan. prolific book illustrator , 1 of notable authors of postcards. in 1902 participated in first (rejected government) project of moscow metro , produced many paintings showing vision of project. in 1904 karazin became academician of imperial academy of arts.
he died in 1908 in gatchina.
