dr class 243

in 1980s, few lines on east german railway network prepared speeds exceeding 120 kilometres per hour (75 mph), had been principal reason deutsche reichsbahn having specified 120 kph top speed class 243 locomotives. in 1984, first batch of 20 locomotives delivered, followed 80 in 1985, 100 in 1986, 110 in 1987 , 114 in 1988. end of 1989, 5 hundred locomotives had been completed.

beginning 143 302, locomotives built 1987 onwards have redesigned body more streamlined cab sections, reducing energy consumption 5% due reduced air resistance.

from 1988 onwards, batch known class 243.8 fitted multiple-unit train control equipment. after these had been delivered, further 109 locomotives without multiple unit train control delivered till december 1990, resulting in deutsche reichsbahn having fleet of 636 class 243 locomotives @ disposal. 243 659 last class  243 locomotive commissioned, entering service on 2 january 1991.

following german reunification, freight traffic in former east germany saw sharp downturn, leading large numbers of locomotives being put preserved storage. beginning in august 1990, 243 922 (later redesignated 143 922) hired südostbahn (swiss south-eastern railway). also, increasing numbers of 243s reallocated freiburg , düsseldorf testing deutsche bundesbahn.

the following year more locomotives moved west used on schwarzwaldbahn, höllentalbahn, rhein-ruhr s-bahn , goods trains dortmund. after db , dr combined in 1994 form deutschen bahn ag class 143 locomotives used on many more lines in former west germany.

the former 212 001 remained property of lew , after testing dr 1982 1984 used various measuring , experimental tasks. in 2002 sold eko-trans , (now numbered 143 001) painted in red , silver livery. in may 2008 143 001 repainted orange logo of new owner, arcelor mittal.

six class 143 locomotives (041, 069, 186, 191, 286, 874) have been sold bahn- und hafenbetriebe der ruhrkohle ag , further 6 (179, 204, 257, 344, 851, 864) mitteldeutsche eisenbahn gesellschaft (meg) have been renumbered meg 601-606.

dbag class 114.1 , 114.3

many class 143 locomotives in use passenger traffic , on longer regionalbahn , regional-express services, maximum speed of 120 km/h (75 mph) awkward, carriages had maximum speed of 140 or 160 km/h (87 or 99 mph). planned rebuild locomotives higher maximum speeds of 140 , 160 km/h (87 , 99 mph), classified class 114.3 , class 114.1 respectively.

143 171 rebuilt maximum speed of 160 km/h (99 mph) , renumbered 114 101. during rebuilding pantograph replaced newer model of type sss 87 , train protection system , brake equipment adapted higher speeds. gear ratio between motors , wheels changed , dampers fitted between locomotive body , bogies.

143 120 rebuilt 114 301 maximum speed of 140 km/h (87 mph). did not require changes gear ratio or fitting of dampers.

both rebuilt locomotives tested in test service , normal use around magdeburg. upgrading 160 km/h (99 mph) cost €300,000 per locomotive , upgrading 140 km/h (87 mph) cost €48,000 per locomotive. reason speed increases 140 km/h (87 mph) have followed.

following german reunification, rail routes berlin rebuilt maximum speed of more 120 km/h (75 mph). deutsche reichsbahn had no locomotives capable of speed had acquire new faster locomotives. however, class 212 locomotives had been designed maximum speed of 160 km/h (99 mph). after 4 prototype locomotives (numbered 212 002 212 005, number 212 001 had been used 143 001 , not reused) series of 35 locomotives (212 006 212 040) delivered.

the class 112 locomotives became unexpected symbol of german reunification because first locomotive class used both deutsche reichsbahn , deutsche bundesbahn. dr , db each ordered 45 improved locomotives of class 112.1 aeg, had taken on lew hennigsdorf had owned factory in 1946. decision db order class 112.1 locomotives support factory @ hennigsdorf db have preferred 200 km/h (120 mph) universal locomotive such class 120.

after overcoming few initial problems class 112 used on interregio trains. in 1995, 112 025 (the former 212 025) renumbered test locomotive 755 025. following end of interregio services , upgrading of regional-express rolling stock speeds of 140 , 160 km/h (87 , 99 mph) class 112 locomotives used predominantly regional services. on 1 january 2004 db fernverkehr transferred class 112.1 locomotives db regio.

all 38 locomotives of class 112.0 reclassified class 114 on 1 april 2000 because time these locomotives had been used exclusively regional trains in berlin, brandenburg , mecklenburg-vorpommern , there several differences between these locomotives , class 112.1. following transfer of remaining class 112 locomotives db regio reason different classifications unnecessary there similar differences between locomotives within class 143.
