the state floor unfinished when president john adams moved white house on november 1, 1800. work continued through 4 remaining months of presidency , first term of thomas jefferson make executive residence habitable. there no floors in east room, blue room, or western third of cross hall (which @ time extended way west, state dining room not extended way north until 1902). there no grand staircase east of entrance hall, , way access second floor via temporary stairs on exterior of building led top of south portico.

until north portico completed in 1829, providing access north lawn , carriageway, entrance hall used space exhibit items brought lewis , clark expedition. glass screen placed between columns along entrance hall s south side in 1837 reduce hall s draftiness, reducing apparent size. more elaborate iron frame added partition in 1853. ordinary glass , frame replaced red, white, , blue colored glass screen designed tiffany & co. in 1882. tiffany screen removed in 1902 renovation.
the area contains grand staircase contained smaller, unadorned staircase second floor. grand staircase moved area during 1902 renovation.
east room
although architect james hoban included space east room in 1792 plans white house, unclear purpose room should fulfill. room s floor finished after president john adams moved in, walls remained bare brick , first lady abigail adams famously hung laundry dry in it.
thomas jefferson furnished room chairs during administration, , had room partitioned (using canvas , sailcloth walls) , southern end used bedroom , office meriwether lewis , lewis harvie (both private secretary president). wasn t until 1807 architect benjamin henry latrobe gave east room function site public audiences , large social events.
rebuilt after burning of white house in 1814, walls remained bare brick , used storage space. president james monroe s daughter married in east room, @ time temporarily furnished, not until administration of john quincy adams walls plastered , painted. east room completed in 1829 under president andrew jackson. major redecorations have occurred, room continues serve function site large social events.
green, blue, , red rooms
james hoban designated today green room common dining room, , thomas jefferson s family took meals here. rectangular ceiling frescoe small circles , trapezoids, designed thomas ustick walter, added in 1853. in 1902 renovation of white house, second door, south of existing door, cut green room blue room. @ same time, new, southern door cut green room east room.
hoban s original plans white house created oval-shaped drawing room (now blue room) in center of south part of executive mansion. since inception, blue room has remained centerpiece of executive residence, serving formal reception space heads of state, ambassadors, , other important people. since creation in 1801, has been redecorated more times (18) other room in white house. originally, door in center of western wall led yellow room. fireplace set in eastern wall opposite door. originally, niches either side of door in north wall mirrored 3 windows in south wall. reconstruction of 1817 radically changed blue room. doors replaced northern niches, , western door red room sealed. on red room side of wall, false door cut wall south of now-sealed central door, , false door north of now-sealed door concealed. oval ceiling frescoe curved trapezoids, designed thomas ustick walter, added in 1853. jib (or disguised) door cut through false door red room in 1891, , second jib door cut through green room south of fireplace in 1902. ceiling medallion , cornice moldings altered architect edward vason jones during nixon administration more closely resemble 1800s styles.
to east of room president s antechamber (later known red room). room had 2 doors, set close together, leading blue room. (the 1 on north false.) beginning in 1809, became music room white house. during 1817 rebuilding of white house, president s antechamber turned yellow parlor. called washington parlor, gilbert stuart painting of george washington hung in room after burning of washington. @ time, 2 doors rebuilt further apart. (now south door became false door.) in 1845, yellow parlor redecorated in crimson, , took current name red room. rectangular ceiling frescoe small central circle, curved trapezoids, , half-moons, designed thomas ustick walter, added in 1853. false door cut through in 1891, , has remained open present.
state dining room
the northern third of state dining room western part of cross hall. 2 flights of stairs (one against north wall, 1 against south wall) led state floor second floor. single, central stair led third floor. not completed when white house occupied in 1800, grand stairs finished architect benjamin henry latrobe in 1803 or shortly thereafter. extensive chimney breast added fireplace in room s west wall when reconstructed in 1817.
a large greenhouse added west side of white house in 1857, replacing 1 on east side had been torn down year make way expansion of treasury building. greenhouse burned down in 1867, , in 1869 president ulysses s. grant built larger, higher greenhouse in place. later presidents expanded greenhouse, until occupied of west wing. grant built billiards room atop , south of breezeway leading west end of ground floor of white house, became palm court in 1877 during rutherford b. hayes administration. hayes authorized new doors cut through stone of mansion s walls provide access between palm court , state dining room.
in 1869, president ulysses s. grant rebuilt grand stair. now, single staircase against north wall led second floor, while second stair on south wall of second floor led third floor. (the new space created on second floor became west sitting hall.)
to south of grand stair smaller room, used cabinet room or president s library. 1817 reconstruction of white house saw cabinet room/presidential library turned state dining room. white house extensively renovated in 1902, during grand stair demolished , new grand staircase built east of entrance hall. state dining room expanded northward space formerly occupied grand stair. small fireplaces in east , west walls of state dining room removed, , northern door palm court sealed. (another door palm court, beneath former grand stairs, sealed.) old palm court door existed, new, massive stone fireplace , oversize mantel (the famous buffalo mantel ) added, match enlarged room s size , grandeur. great venetian window formerly spanned width of cross hall in mansion s west wall reduced in size width of standard first floor window. french door in lower half of window led breezeway. room paneled in english oak in renaissance revival style, , furnishings replaced turn room beaux-arts baronial hall (complete tapestries, cooking racks on fireplace, , stuffed animal heads).
during 1948-to-1952 reconstruction of white house, state dining room radically redecorated. buffalo mantel not reused, , instead given president truman (who had installed in presidential library). oak paneling, heavy damaged during removal, reinstalled , given coat of bright celadon green hide flaws. (some of frieze had recarved had been sanded down accommodate stuffed animal heads.) painting scheme proved much. jacqueline kennedy had room painted bone white in 1961, proved bright. room painted antique white in 1971 , again in 1981, , off-white umber glaze in 1985.
family dining room , chief usher s office
as constructed, north of cross hall public dining room, porter s lodge between dining room , entrance hall, , narrow, winding private stair. when white house rebuilt in 1817, public dining room became private dining room. room partitioned make smaller, , western third of room turned pantry. president james monroe gave state dinners in private dining room 1817 1825, , subsequent presidents used formal dining room first family or space official small events. 1849 used ladies receiving room, function retained late 1865.
during white house s 1902 renovation, pantry received mezzanine increase utility. family dining room added vaulted ceiling, faux paneling, , frieze featuring neoclassical designs. frieze broken high windows in north wall, windows lowered in 1961 , frieze allowed continue unbroken around entire room. faux paneling removed @ time, , walls painted yellow. family dining room underwent first significant renovation since kennedy years in 2015. first lady michelle obama had room painted light grey, , decor, furniture, rug, , artwork reflect mid-20th century modern look.
the area east of family dining room, tucked against entrance hall, service space. porter s lodge (work , storage space) occupied northern two-thirds of space, while narrow, sharping winding stairs allowed servants access second floor. 1801, porter s space had become generic workroom. made porter s lodge again in 1825. retained use late 1865. renovation of 1902 moved servants staircase center of area, creating corridor on north , west sides , small closet south. after 1948-to-1952 gutting , restoration of white house, northern space became chief usher s office. continued retain layout of 2010.
