throughout 1980s , 1990s, when film still under public domain status, s wonderful life released on vhs variety of home video companies. among companies released film on home video before republic pictures stepped in meda video (which later become media home entertainment), kartes video communications (under video film classics label), goodtimes home video , video treasures (now anchor bay entertainment). after republic reclaimed rights film, unofficial vhs copies of film in print destroyed. artisan entertainment (under license republic) took on home video rights in mid-1990s. artisan later sold lions gate entertainment, continued hold home video rights until late 2005 when reverted paramount, owns video rights throughout region 4 (latin america , australia) , in france. video rights in rest of world held different companies; example, uk rights universal studios.


technological first: cd-rom

in 1993, due in part confusion of ownership , copyright issues, kinesoft development, support of republic pictures, released s wonderful life 1 of first commercial feature-length films on cd-rom windows pc (windows 3.1). predating commercial dvds several years, included such features ability follow along complete shooting script film playing.


given state of video playback on pc @ time of release, s wonderful life windows represented first, longest running video on computer. prior release, windows play approx. 32,000 frames of video, or 35 minutes @ 15 frames per second. working microsoft, kinesoft able enhance video features of windows allow complete playback of entire film — of on pc 486sx processor , 8 mb of ram.

the film has seen multiple dvd releases since availability of dvd format. in autumn of 2001, republic issued movie twice, once in august, , again different packaging in september of same year. on october 31, 2006, paramount released newly restored 60th anniversary edition . on november 13, 2007, paramount released two-disc special edition dvd of film contained both original theatrical black-and-white version, , new, third colorized version, produced legend films using latest colorization technology. on november 3, 2009, paramount released dvd version collector s edition ornament , , blu-ray edition.
