the east end, entrance made in 1941
it customary cathedrals orientated on east-west axis main door west , sanctuary east. st andrew s conformed tradition. major thoroughfare, george street, runs eastern rather western end, making main entrance less accessible. meant when electric tram system installed in street, noise drowned out service of holy communion.
in 1941 interior therefore reoriented. new raised chancel floor built in west end, west door permanently closed , reredos placed in front of it. internal fittings of chancel relocated, positioning of reredos right against wall creating space. there claim acoustics improved spurious. while, on 1 hand, trams not have seemed loud, being more remote, negative effects on internal acoustics significant , large number of choristers employed make heard.
in 1999–2000 major conservation , restoration work undertaken restore original internal layout, whereby sanctuary relocated @ cathedral s eastern end. achieved under deanship of reverend boak jobbins. part of reorientation , conservation, whitely organ removed north transept gallery, revealing 1 of larger of hardman s windows including, notably , controversially, crucifixion, depiction in entire cathedral, crucifixions of saints andrew , peter.
