The Battle of Goito and the fall of Peschiera First Italian War of Independence

after victories @ curtatone , montanara, radetzky split forces 2 columns: wratislaw s 1st corps , reserve force under wocher (a total of 26,000 men) sent north towards goito; d aspre s 2nd corps (14,000 men) sent northwest through rodigo , ceresara, towards guidizzolo , medole. intended out-flank piedmontese army on mincio, spread out between valeggio, volta, , goito.
on other side, piedmontese scouts did not report rapid advance of enemy , bava, in command of 1st corps, exposed attack south, decided concentrate forces near goito. @ 3pm on 30 may had stationed 21 battalions of infantry, 23 squadrons of cavalry, , 56 piedmontese cannons, battalion of neapolitan 10th regiment abruzzo , thousand tuscans, in area.
half hour later, 1st austrian corps began attack on 1st piedmontese corps. right wing of austrians, next river mincio, advanced , targeted italian artillery. centre overwhelmed piedmontese front line, not able overcome sustained counterattack of piedmontese second line , came under artillery fire. fresh austrian forces sent in support, insufficient. radetzky, had lost contact 2nd corps, ordered troops withdraw. 2 piedmontese cavalry charges helped make austrian withdrawal more retreat. battle on 7pm. italians had suffered 43 dead , 253 wounded, austrians 68 dead, 331 wounded, , 223 fled..
radetzky s grand strategic manoeuvre had failed. had managed bring 14 battalions contact enemy, keeping cavalry inactive. further, @ moment of final piedmontese counterattack, charles albert had received news fortress of peschiera had been taken, , little after this, austrian retreat @ goito announced. news of double victory greeted present cheers of long live king of italy! .
