in 1985, kasten arrested , charged driving under influence after district of columbia police officer observed him running red light , driving on wrong side of road. charges later dropped.


in 1986, kasten narrowly defeated democrat ed garvey win second term after bitter campaign, 1 characterized personal attacks , remembered 1 of nastiest elections in wisconsin history. kasten defeated democratic state senator russ feingold in 1992.
