waldheim prison


in 1588 waldheim castle again rebuilt hunting lodge elector christian of saxony. in 1716 augustus ii strong inaugurated penitentiary, almshouse , orphanage in castle, used prison (justizvollzugsanstalt) today. later author karl may served sentence here 1870 1874. in nazi era, waldheim became notorious detention centre political opponents, convicted preparation of high treason, undermining military morale or listening banned feindsender radio stations. among inmates several resistance fighters eva schulze-knabe, convicted people s court in 1942 , freed @ end of world war ii.


when nkvd special camps handed on soviet military administration east german government in 1950, numerous nkvd detainees transferred waldheim further detention , trial. april june 1950, communist authorities put 3,400 alleged war , nazi criminals so-called waldheim trials, ending prepared , overlong prison terms , 32 death sentences.
