tarn s 3 principal ranges lying south-east are: mountains of lacaune, sidobre, , montagne noire, belonging cevennes.


the stony , wind-blown slopes of mountains of lacaune (monts de lacaune) used pasture. highest point of range , of department puech montgrand, 1,267 m (4,157 ft) high; several other summits not short of this.


the granite-strewn plateaux of sidobre, 490 610 m (1,600 2,000 ft) high, separate valley of river agout of western tributary, river thoré.


the montagne noire, on southwestern border of department, derives name forests on northern slope. highest point pic de nore @ 1,211 m (3,973 ft) high.


the limestone , sandstone foot-hills clothed vines , fruit trees, , broken deep alluvial valleys of particular fertility. exception of small portion of montagne noire, drains river aude, whole department belongs basin of garonne.
