the yajurveda text includes shukla yajurveda of 16 recensions known, while krishna yajurveda may have had many 86 recensions. 2 recensions of shukla yajurveda have survived, madhyandina , kanva, , others known name because mentioned in other texts. these 2 recensions same, except few differences. in contrast shukla yajurveda, 4 surviving recensions of krishna yajurveda different versions.


shukla yajurveda

the samhita in shukla yajurveda called vajasaneyi samhita. name vajasaneyi derived vajasaneya, patronymic of sage yajnavalkya, , founder of vajasaneyi branch. there 2 (nearly identical) surviving recensions of vajasaneyi samhita (vs): vajasaneyi madhyandina , vajasaneyi kanva. lost recensions of white yajurveda, mentioned in other texts of ancient india, include jabala, baudhya, sapeyi, tapaniya, kapola, paundravatsa, avati, paramavatika, parasara, vaineya, vaidheya, katyayana , vaijayavapa.



krishna yajurveda

there 4 surviving recensions of krishna yajurveda – taittirīya saṃhitā, maitrayani saṃhitā, kaṭha saṃhitā , kapiṣṭhala saṃhitā. total of eighty 6 recensions mentioned exist in vayu purana, vast majority of them believed lost. katha school referred sub-school of carakas (wanderers) in ancient texts of india, because did scholarship wandered place place.



the best known , best preserved of these recensions taittirīya saṃhitā. attribute tittiri, pupil of yaksa , mentioned panini. text associated taittiriya school of yajurveda, , attributed pupils of sage tittiri (literally, partridge birds).


the maitrayani saṃhitā oldest yajurveda samhita has survived, , differs largely in content taittiriyas, in different arrangement of chapters, more detailed.


the kāṭhaka saṃhitā or caraka-kaṭha saṃhitā, according tradition compiled katha, disciple of vaisampayana. maitrayani samhita, offers more detailed discussion of rituals younger taittiriya samhita summarizes such accounts. kapiṣṭhala saṃhitā or kapiṣṭhala-kaṭha saṃhitā, named after sage kapisthala extant in large fragments , edited without accent marks. text practically variant of kāṭhaka saṃhitā.

each regional edition (recension) of yajurveda had samhita, brahmana, aranyakas, upanishads part of text, shrautasutras, grhyasutras , pratishakhya attached text. in shukla yajurveda, text organization same both madhayndina , kanva shakhas. texts attached shukla yajurveda include katyayana shrautasutra, paraskara grhyasutra , shukla yajurveda pratishakhya.


in krishna yajurveda, each of recensions has or had brahmana text mixed samhita text, creating motley of prose , verses, , making unclear, disorganized.
