History West Philadelphia High School
the original west philadelphia high school (wphs) building opened in 1912 philadelphia s first secondary school west of schuylkill, occupying entire city block bounded 47th street, 48th street, walnut street , locust street. student population @ time in excess of 5,500. such press on new high school, stood 2 separate buildings boys , girls, city compelled open overbrook high school in 1926. third high school, john bartram, followed in 1935.
the building added national register of historic places in 1986.
wphs s athletic field, located @ 48th , spruce street, formerly known passon field , home negro league baseball in 1930s. home field of eastern colored league s philadelphia bacharach giants starting in 1931, , negro national league s philadelphia stars in 1934 , 1935. in 1936 stars moved penmar park @ 44th , parkside, played majority of home games through final season in 1952. field still in use west philadelphia high school s football , baseball teams.
in september 2011 school moved new building @ current building @ 49th & chestnut streets. new building smaller due reduced enrollment @ high school. of 2016 there plans convert old building apartments.
in june 2013 school district allowed sustainability workshop take of space in auto mechanic building, prompting community opposition.
in november 2016, water faucets @ high school found discolored, , declared unsafe school officials following month.
