in april 1982, collapse in royersville tunnel (the tunnel on old dt&i) prompted gtw shut down line between jackson , ironton. tunnel had suffered collapses many times in past limited remaining business south of jackson , operational problems of tunnel led gtw s decision. @ same time, gtw bypassed steep , treacherous summithill section between bainbridge , waverly rerouting trains onto chessie system trackage washington court house, ohio waverly, onto former dt&i jackson. in 1984 operations south of washington court house suspended, jackson shops closed, , track dismantled.


a short section of dt&i main west out of jackson still in place serving connection industries remaining line jackson. short section of dt&i north junction b&o southwestern near greenfield still in place serve local industry. portions of line between greenfield , washington court house purchased washington court house intention of creating rail-trail, unable acquire enough conjoined sections build trail.
